TAMPA, Fla. - Sophomore Andrew Clark blasted a grand slam in the top of the ninth to give the University of Louisville a dramatic 10-7 win over USF Friday night at Red McEwen Field.
In the Cardinal first, Phil Wunderlich hit a one out single and scored on a RBI double that Chris Dominguez blistered down the right field line for a 1-0 Louisville (18-13, 5-5 BIG EAST) lead.
The Cards added to the lead in the fourth. Clark and Jeff Arnold hit consecutive singles and moved up a station on a sac bunt by Tyler Mickits before Kyle Cheesebrough ripped a double into the corner in left, plating two.
Wunderlich was then hit by a pitch leading off the fifth and Justin McClanahan's RBI double made it 4-0 Cards.
In the Bulls' (15-17, 5-8 BIG EAST) half of the fifth, Jonathan Koscso and Addison Marusak hit consecutive singles and Brandon Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Joey Angelberger, who took a 2-2 pitch out to left to tie the game at four.
USF then took their first lead of the game on an RBI single by Marusak in the bottom of the sixth.
UofL regained the advantage in the seventh when McClanahan singled and Dominguez smoked a 1-1 pitch out to left center for his 10th home run of the season and a 6-5 lead.
The seesaw battle continued after the stretch when Stephen Hunt's RBI single tied the game at six and a sac fly to center by Trey Manz put the Bulls back in the lead 7-6.
Each team sent the minimum to the plate in the eighth, setting the stage for the thrilling ninth.
Wunderlich and McClanahan singled, and Wunderlich was replaced by pinch runner Neil Holland. Dominguez then went the other way with a single to right, loading the bases for Clark.
The Cardinal first baseman worked the count to 3-1 before hammering the first Cardinal grand slam of the season to put the Cards on top for good.
Cardinal starter Zack Pitts was touched for four runs on eight hits and a walk in five innings, striking out three.
Bob Revesz was victimized for three runs on four hits and two walks in an inning and a third.
Thomas Royse (2-0), allowed just two hits in an inning and two-thirds to earn the win. Senior B.J. Rosenberg gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
USF closer Shawn Sanford (4-4) gave up three runs on three hits and a walk in one-third of an inning and was the losing pitcher.
McClanahan, Dominguez and Clark were a combined 8 for 14 with eight RBI and six runs for the Cardinals.
The Cardinal defense turned a season-high four double plays, including a phenomenal 3-6-1 turn that ended the sixth on a spectacular pick up by Clark, turn by John Dao and an extraordinary stretch by Revesz at first.
Game two of the weekend set begins at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
