
Mello, Smyth Earn Third Team All-BIG EAST Honors

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - University of Louisville senior women's soccer players Jessica Mello and Shannon Smyth each were named Third Team All-BIG EAST at the league's annual awards banquet on Thursday night on the eve of the 2008 BIG EAST Championship semifinals.
Mello, a defender from Cincinnati, Ohio, started in all 19 games in 2008 as a key component to the Cards' defense, which had five shutouts and allowed only one goal in nine other games. Overall, Mello has played in 78 games as a Cardinal, which ranks second in school history, while her 76 career starts ranks third all-time at U of L.
Smyth, a forward from Milwaukee, Wis., appeared in all 19 games in 2008, including 15 starts, while scoring four goals, adding a pair of assists and leading the team in shots with 52. Overall, Smyth has scored 15 goals in a Cardinal uniform with nine career assists, and she ranks seventh all-time in school history with 76 career games played.
The Cards (9-7-3 overall) were eliminated from the 2008 BIG EAST Championship with a 4-0 loss at West Virginia on Sunday in the quarterfinals. Louisville, which finished fourth in the National Division with a 6-3-2 conference record, opened the BIG EAST Championship with a 1-0 first round win over Pittsburgh on Oct. 30.
