LOUISVILLE, KY - Mike Lynn tossed six innings of scoreless baseball to lead the University of Louisville baseball team to a 6-0 win over Morehead State on Wednesday. It was the Cards' second shutout of the season as three U of L pitchers combined on a three-hitter.
Boomer Whiting walked on four pitches, stole second, moved to third on a balk and scored on a groundout by Nick Haley to put the Cards(24-18) up 1-0 in the first.
A leadoff walk to Isaiah Howes in the second turned into the second run of the game for the Cards when Chris Cates singled him home for a 2-0 U of L advantage.
A four-run fifth started with a walk to Haley. A groundout and wild pitch moved him to third, and he scored on a sac fly by Jorge Castillo. Howes then singled and was plated on Logan Johnson's team leading 13th double of the season.
Ryan McKinnon was hit by a pitch and a walk to Greg Taylor loaded the bases. Cates's bunt single scored Johnson, and when Nick Nail's throw to first in an attempt to get Cates was off the bag, McKinnon snuck in and scored the sixth Cardinal run.
Lynn (2-1) struck out a career-best seven allowing just two hits and two walks in his six frames, facing just three over the minimum in the win. He struck out the side in order in the third as one of three 1-2-3 innings. Lynn has now tossed 12.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
Freshman Jake Smith tossed two perfect innings of relief, striking out one, and Jon Harbridge finished out the game allowing a hit and fanning one in the ninth.
The season-low three hits allowed by the Cards were all singles. As a staff, the Cards faced just four over the minimum on the afternoon.
Morehead (25-19) starter Matt Clark (3-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and six walks in four innings. He struck out three. Four Eagle relievers each tossed an inning to close out the game.
Louisville heads to Charlotte for a pivotal three-game weekend series in Conference USA against the 49ers, beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET.
