
Cards Split Twin Bill with Billikens

ST. LOUIS, MO - The University of Louisville scored a season-best 19 runs in a 19-4 win over Saint Louis in game one of a doubleheader with the Billikens Saturday. The Cardinal bats were quieted in the night cap as they lost to SLU 4-1.
The Billikens (8-29, 4-13) went up 2-0 in the second inning of game one on a two-run single by Bill Musselman.
Louisville (19-16, 8-8) went up 3-2 in the top of the third with three unearned runs. Chris Cates singled, Boomer Whiting walked and Nick Haley was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a fielding error allowed Isaiah Howes to reach and push across a run. Logan Johnson was then plunked to plate another run, and Ryan McKinnon scored the third run when he reached on catcher's interference.
An RBI single by Scott Pedan in the bottom of the third knotted the game at three.
In the U of L fourth, 13 batters came to the plate as the Cards notched eight runs on just three hits.
Greg Taylor reached on an leading off the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Cates. Whiting singled and Haley walked to load the bases for J.T. LaFountain, who forced in a run with another free pass.
Howes walked in a run and Johnson singled home two more. McKinnon was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for pinch hitter Jorge Castillo who also walked in a run. Taylor singled in a run, Cates walked in another and a sac fly by Whiting capped the inning, leaving the Cards up 11-3.
LaFountain smacked his 43rd career double to open the fifth, tying him for ninth all-time at U of L. Howes walked and Johnson doubled home LaFountain. McKinnon walked, and a sac fly by Castillo scored Johnson for a 14-3 lead.
A double by Howes scored Whiting, who had singled to lead off the sixth for a 15-3 advantage.
The Bills got the run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Tim Landy.
Derrick Alfonso's pinch single and walks to LaFountain and Danny Plasencia loaded the bases for Michael Urti, whose pinch double cleared the bases. Jon Townsend's double scored Urti and shut the book on the scoring in game one.
B.J. Rosenberg (4-2) picked up the win in game one, twirling seven innings in the start, allowing four runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three. Zack Pitts finished up with a perfect eighth as the 15-run rule ended the game after eight.
Mark Zielinski (1-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs, three of which were earned on four hits and three walks.
Johnson was 2 for 4 with four RBI in game one.
Pedan's two-run home run in the bottom of the first put the Bills up 2-0 and extended his hit streak to a school record 28 games.
A solo home run by B.J. Rodrigue in the second made it 3-0 SLU.
Johnson singled with one out in the fourth and moved to third on a double by McKinnon before scoring on an RBI fielder's choice by Cates for the Cards' only run of game two.
An RBI single by Jerry Vickery made it 4-1 Saint Louis.
Ryan Bird (3-4) earned the win, allowing a run on nine hits, fanning five in seven innings. Charlie Blume walked one and struck out one in two innings to earn his first save.
Scott Jenkins (1-1) took the loss in his first career start, surrendering four runs on five hits and five walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four. Justin Valdes allowed four hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of relief.
The teams will play the rubber game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
