
Tigers Top Cardinal Nine

LOUISVILLE, KY - The Memphis Tigers pounded out 16 hits, including four home runs, on their way to an 11-7 win over the University of Louisville in the series opener Friday.
A solo home run off the bat of Memphis shortstop Brent Dlugach opened the second, and four batters later a three-run shot by Chad House gave the Tigers(13-10, 2-5) a 4-0 lead.
The Cardinals(16-9, 5-2) cut the margin to one with a three-run third. Second baseman Nick Haley walked, and when Memphis first baseman Adam Amar mishandled the throw on a sacrifice attempt, the Cards had runners at first and second with one out.
An out later, catcher Ron Braun doubled home Haley, and third baseman Ryan McKinnon singled home two more, making it 4-3 Tigers.
A leadoff walk in the fourth resulted in a run on an RBI double by UM's Michael Lewis, and a second solo home run by Dlugach, this one with one out in the fifth gave the Tigers a 6-3 edge.
Another solo home run, this one by Jordan Hart with one out in the sixth, extended the Memphis lead to 7-3, and an RBI single by Kurt Welch made it 8-3
A Lewis sac fly and two unearned runs in the eighth extended the margin to 11-3 Tigers.
The Cards plated a run in the eighth when an RBI single by Isaiah Howes scored McKinnon.
An RBI double by Haley scored Cates in the ninth, a base hit by Mark Jurich followed by a throwing error sent Haley home and Jurich eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Braun to close the books.
Freshman Justin Valdes (3-3) and took the loss, permitting six runs on nine hits and three walks, fanning four in 4.2 innings.
Scott Jenkins allowed five runs, three of which were earned on six hits and two walks, striking out three in three innings. Griffin Bailey allowed a hit and plunked two batters over the final 1.1 frames for the Cardinals.
Memphis starter Jarrett Grube(5-1) earned the win, giving up four runs, just one of which was earned on six hits and two walks, striking out seven over 7.2 innings.
Haley extended his career-long hit streak to 16 games, as he, Jurich, Braun and McKinnon each had two hits.
The Cardinals and Tigers will meet again for game two of the three-game set on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET. Admission and parking are free.
