LOUISVILLE, KY - University of Memphis starter Derek Hankins tossed a complete-game four hitter, striking out 14, as the Tigers defeated the University of Louisville 6-2 on Saturday, taking a two games to none lead in the weekend series.
The Cards(15-11, 5-3) got off to a good start as sophomore Nick Haley wasted no time extending his hitting streak to a career-high 17 games, delivering a lead off home run, putting U of L on top 1-0.
Memphis(14-10, 3-5) scored two unearned runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead.
An RBI single by right fielder Mark Jurich plated Haley in the third to knot the game at two.
The Tigers broke the tie with a three-run sixth, punctuated by a two-run home run by DH Kyle Scott, giving the Tigers a 5-2 lead.
Patrick Hope drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh, closing the scoring.
Hankins(3-3) allowed just one earned run, and did not walk a man. At one point he struck out seven straight and retired 16 in a row, facing the minimum over the last six.
Cardinal starter B.J. Rosenberg (1-1) lasted 6.1 frames, surrendering all six runs, four of which were earned on nine hits and three walks. He struck out four in the loss.
Chase Cruse worked the final 2.2 innings allowing three hits and a walk to go with four K's.
Freshman Chris Cates had two of the four Cardinal hits on the afternoon.
The Cardinals and Tigers will meet for the final game of the three-game set on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at Cardinal Stadium. Admission and parking are free.
