LOUISVILLE, KY - An 11-run first inning vaulted the University of Louisville Cardinal baseball team to an easy 13-1 win over Murray State in game one of a doubleheader at Cardinal Stadium Tuesday. The offense picked up where it left off, completing a sweep with a 13-4 win in game two.
In the first game, the first eight batters of the game scored, with 14 batters coming to the plate.
Nick Haley walked, Chris Cates singled, and Mark Jurich singled home Haley. Walks to Ron Braun and Isaiah Howes loaded the bases for Ryan McKinnon who lifted a towering drive down the left field line that glanced off the top of the wall for a two-run double.
Greg Taylor doubled home two more runs and Daniel Burton followed with a single of his own.
Haley, batting for the second time in the inning, singled home Taylor, and Cates doubled home Burton. Jurich then cleared the bases with a triple to the gap in left, and scored on a passed ball to close the scoring in the first.
With two out in the third, Howes doubled, McKinnon and Taylor were hit by pitches before Burton singled two home, giving the Cards a 13-0 lead.
The 'Breds(2-13) plated their only run in the fifth on a pair of singles and an RBI groundout.
Cardinal senior starter Mike Tisdale (1-2) twirled his eighth career complete game, tying him for ninth in U of L history. He allowed only five baserunners scattering four hits and an error, while striking out five.
He retired the side in order in three of the seven innings.
Jake Ociesa (0-3) was shelled for seven runs on four hits and three walks. He did not retire a single batter.
Cates and Burton each had three hits in game one, while Jurich drove in three.
Game two started in similar fashion, with U of L(9-7) putting up a four spot in the first.
Haley again opened the game with a walk, Jurich singled and Braun walked to load the bases. Howes singled home a run, and catcher Luis Pardo scored Jurich on a sac fly to right.
McKinnon delivered the big blow in the inning with a double to center that plated two.
An RBI triple by Scotty Scott in the second put Murray on the board, making it 4-1.
In the bottom of the second, Burton lead off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt by Haley.
Cates followed and drilled a pitch to the gap in left center that rolled all the way to the wall. Burton scored easily on the play, and Cates motored around the bases for an inside-the-park home run, the first since Bill Gatti Jr. did it on February 18, 2001, and his first home run of his career.
With a 6-1 lead, Jurich singled home Cates in the fourth.
Burton doubled in a run in the fifth and eventually scored on a groundout by Haley to make it 9-1 Cards.
Dustin Hennigar doubled home a run in the sixth for MSU cutting the lead to seven.
The Cards answered with four runs in the sixth. Jurich walked and Braun singled before Pardo matched McKinnon's double off the wall in left, scoring Jurich.
Freshman Logan Johnson then ripped a pinch-hit single up the middle to score two more, and he was plated on a double by Haley to close the scoring for Louisville.
A single was followed by back-to-back doubles in the ninth, scoring two runs for the Thoroughbreds.
Trystan Magnuson made the first appearance of his career, starting the game for U of L and allowing a run on two hits in two innings, striking out two.
Sophomore Griffin Bailey (1-1) followed with two perfect innings to earn the win, striking out two of his own.
Jason Keck walked two in a scoreless fifth, and was followed by Scott Jenkins, who gave up a run on three hits in the sixth.
The final two runs of the game were scored on Steve Ayers on three hits. He struck out two.
MSU starter Bart Peach (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out five.
Louisville has now won four straight and six of its last seven.
The Cards will open the Conference USA slate on the road in Birmingham against UAB beginning Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET, the first of a three-game weekend series with the Blazers.
