LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Louisville Cardinal women's soccer team completed an undefeated weekend, hosting three matches Saturday and posting a 2-0-1 record. Each match consisted of two 25 minute halves.
The Cards opened with a 2-1 win over Murray State. After a scoreless first stanza, Hollie Minogue finished a cross from Lisa Martin to give U of L a 1-0 lead.
Murray State answered finishing a rebound off a set piece midway through the second half, but in the final minutes Heather Orahood put home the game-winner on a nice pass from Mandy Rost to seal the victory.
"This was a good game for us and a great way to start the day. We had to compete the whole game in order to get the victory and the players made the most of their chances," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
In the second match, Louisville pressured the Kentucky ODP 86, but struggled to finish, hitting the post on several occasions early.
Midway through the half ODP was able to capitalize on a rebound to go up 1-0.
Minutes later Nikki Ilg headed home a corner by Ashley Garcia to tie the match at one, and the Cards continued to control play offensively, but could not put home the winning score.
"I though tactically we played very well but this game showed us that it's not okay to just be the superior team, we have to finish our opportunities and prove it on the scoreboard," noted Ferguson.
In the final match of the day, U of L came from behind to top Dayton Soccer Academy with three unanswered goals, 3-1.
Cardinal keeper had a difficult time controlling a shot attempt, and Dayton put in the rebound for the 1-0 advantage.
Rost, Martin and Gina Lower scored goals for the Cards in the win.
"We asked a lot of our players physically and by this game you could see that fatigue was setting in. I was happy that we were able to create as many scoring chances as we did and finish with a solid win. All in all the day was a success because the players saw plenty of minutes and our will to win was evident," Ferguson concluded.
Seibert and Angie Gangel played a half in each of the three games and allowed a combined 3 goals. The Cardinal offense maintained a balanced attack as six different players contributed in the scoring.
Louisville is now 6-0-3 in spring competition and wraps up the Spring on Wednesday, April 16th at Cardinal Park against Javanon Soccer Club. Kickoff is at 7:30. Admission is free to all U of L home soccer matches.
