Nikita Sheremet Advances to 50 Freestyle Finals

ATLANTA -- University of Louisville sprinter Nikita Sheremet will advance to the finals of the 50 freestyle after qualifying eighth and clocking in at 18.73 after the Day 3 preliminaries at the NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.

In the first event for the Cardinals on Friday morning, Jake Eccleston put up the fifth fastest time in school history in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a 1:51.96 to finish 14^th overall and earn Honorable Mention All-American honors. Tommy Bried turned in a 1:54.64 to finish second in his prelim heat and 29^th overall. Ben Delmar's 1:49.37 makes North Carolina the favorite going into tonight's final.

In the 500 freestyle, Gregg Enoch put up a 4:21.55 with Texas' Rex Maurer throwing down a 4:08.78 to be the top qualifier.

In the 50 freestyle, Sheremet was just .02 of a second off his own school record, posting a 18.73 to advance. Tennessee's Gui Caribe's 18.39 led the field and he will be the one to beat in the finals.

In the final event of the morning, the 400 medley relay squad, the Cards boarded a 3:02.83. Rian Graham led off the backstroke leg wit ha 45.96 split and turned the race over to breaststroker Jake Eccleston, who went 51.27 and improved to fourth place. Aiden Musso swam the fly leg with a split of 46.68 and handed over third place to anchor Nikita Sheremet, who split 40.92 and hit the wall in second place.

ESPN+ will provide live digital coverage for preliminary and finals sessions Wednesday through Saturday. Tape-delayed coverage of the men's championships will be on ESPNU at 7 p.m. ET, Monday, March 30.

A total of 270 participants (235 swimmers and 35 divers) will compete in the championships. Swimmers qualified for the championships either by winning their conference championship in an event with an established minimum time in that swim or by meeting the established minimum time for the events in which they entered. Divers were determined by performances achieved at the Zone C Diving Championships held Mar. 8-11 in Ypsilanti, Mich. Selected divers were announced Thursday, Mar. 12. The complete lists of all swimmers (athletes by institution, official psych sheet, relays, and alternates) competing in the championships is available at usaswimming.org/ncaa.

Tommy Bried, Guy Brooks, Jake Eccleston, Gregg Enoch, Jackson Millard, and Nikita Sheremet along with relay swimmers Finnley Conklin, Charlie Crush, Rian Graham, and Aiden Musso will represent the Cards down in Atlanta. Rayce Winn will compete in 1-meter diving, while Ray Preas will compete on the platform.
