Cards Score Late, Even Series Against Notre Dame
March 14, 2026 | Baseball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team got three runs in the eighth on the way to an 8-7 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (13-6, 1-1 ACC) bounced back after a tough Friday loss to secure its first ACC win of the season.
The Cardinals and Irish will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
Louisville trailed 4-1 after three innings on Saturday, giving up two runs in the second and two more in the third.
The Cardinals battled back though, scoring twice in the fourth and fifth to take their first lead of the night.
Bayram Hot and Kade Elam had consecutive two-out RBI singles in the fourth, and Griffin Crain delivered a two-run single with two away in the fifth.
However, the game would quickly seesaw back in Notre Dame's favor. The Irish took advantage of a defensive miscue to tie the game in the sixth and then jumped back in front with a two-run double in the seventh.
Trailing 7-5, the Louisville offense went to work in the eighth. Crain and Hot led off with singles before moving up 90 feet on a groundout. A ball to the backstop allowed Crain to score to pull the Cards within one, but a strikeout left the tying run on third with two away.
Alex Alicea would come through in the clutch though. The junior tripled into the right field corner to score Hot and tie the game at seven. Walks to Lucas Moore and Zion Rose would then load up the bases and Tague Davis beat out an infield dribbler for what would prove to be the game-winning hit.
Notre Dame (11-5, 3-2) wouldn't go quietly in the ninth. The Irish got the first two batters on to start the frame before the Cards cut down the lead runner at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Another groundball led to a force out at second for the second out but a walk would load the bases.
Aaron England would work out of the jam, getting a flyout to right to secure the victory. The sophomore recorded the final nine outs of the game for his first career win.
Wyatt Danilowicz allowed four earned runs over 5.1 innings in the start.
All nine Louisville starters had at least one hit on the night, led by Crain's 3-for-4 showing. Seven different Cardinals scored a run in the win.
