Louisville improves to 9-0 home, 10-2 on the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team (10-2-0, 3-1-0 ACC) defended home field once again in its 2-0 win over Miami (6-4-1, 0-3-0 ACC) Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. With the win, Louisville swept another homestand and improved to 9-0 at home this season, tying the program record for most home wins in a single season.
The Cardinals pitched another shutout at home this season with the win over the Hurricanes. It is their seventh-straight clean sheet at Lynn Stadium and they have only allowed a goal in one of their nine games at home. The Cards have a shutout in nine of their 12 games this season.
Erynn Floyd has started in all nine shutouts this season and has seven solo shutouts, which leads the ACC. Floyd had two saves on the night, including a penalty kick save early in the second half. Emersen Jennings and Kiley Peat scored the two goals in the first half for the Cardinals while Liza Suydam, Grace Maddox and Lizzie Sexton each recorded an assist.
The Cardinals took control of possession early on in the match and most of the early minutes were played in their attacking third. After a few early crosses that came up empty, the Cardinals broke through in the 17th minute.
Karsyn Cherry played a ball up to Suydam into the attacking third. Suydam sent a pass towards the far corner that was dummied by Mackenzie Geigle and went through to Maddox. Maddox immediately sent a low ball into the box for Jennings. She fired a shot under the crossbar and past the keeper for the opening goal of the game and her fourth goal of the season.
Miami started to push forward a bit after the goal but the Louisville defense was stout and kept any dangerous chances from occurring. Floyd saved the only shot on target in the first half for the Hurricanes.
The Cardinals doubled their lead just before half in the 42nd minute. Sexton took a shot from distance and it was initially saved by the Miami keeper but the ball got loose after the save. Kiley Peat beat the keeper to the loose ball and got a shot between her legs for Peat's second goal of the season and the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead into the half.
The second half started with a flurry of action as the Hurricanes were awarded a penalty kick in the 49th minute. Floyd was up to the task as she dove to her right to make the save and keep the Cardinals advantage at 2-0. Miami did not record a shot on goal over the remaining 40 minutes as the Cardinals sealed another home victory.
Louisville will begin a long stretch of road games over the next few weeks with a big matchup to kick off the road trip. The Cardinals next game will be on Friday, October 3, when they travel to South Bend to take on second-ranked Notre Dame. The two teams will square off at 6 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
