Louisville went 1-1 in its opening road trip of the season
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Louisville women's soccer team dropped the final game of its road trip, 2-0, to No. 17 Vanderbilt Sunday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Vanderbilt scored twice in the opening 20 minutes and the Cardinals were unable to break through on the score sheet.
The Cardinals had a good chance to open the scoring in the 11th minute. Amelia Swinarski had a good run into the box for the chance. She cut back to beat her defender and sent a pass back towards the middle of the box but could not connect with any of the oncoming attackers.
Vanderbilt jumped in front in the 13th minute after a long pass up from Mary Beth McLaughlin. She found a streaking Olivia Stafford behind the Louisville defense and she tucked a shot into the back of the net to give the Commodores a 1-0 lead.
Vanderbilt doubled its lead in the 19th minute after Courtney Jones converted from the spot to put the Dores up 2-0.
Erynn Floyd made some key saves in the first half to keep the Cards in striking distance but they trailed 2-0 at the break.
The Cardinals had a chance in the 52nd when Lizzie Sexton got fouled heading into the box. After a review, it was determined the foul occurred just outside the box and it gave Louisville a free kick in a dangerous area. The service into the box got headed around but the Commodores eventually cleared it out of danger.
Vanderbilt turned the ball over at midfield in the 77th minute and it led to a chance when Emersen Jennings got in behind the Commodores defense. She was 1-v-1 with the keeper but her shot ended high of the net and out of play.
Up next for the Cardinals is a six-game homestand that kicks off on Thursday, August 21. It will be a doubleheader as the men's team will take on Southern Indiana at 5 p.m. before the women take on Detroit at approximately 7:30 p.m. ET from Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Both matches will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra and admission is free.
