Louisville ties a program record for most goals in a game at Lynn Stadium
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team (2-1-0) showed out in the 8-0 home opening win over Detroit Mercy (1-2-0) on Thursday night from Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals had seven different players score a goal and five players tally an assist in the victory. The Cardinals tied program records for goals and assists in a game played at Lynn Stadium.
Mackenzie Geigle tallied a brace in the win, scoring in the first and second half. Amelia Swinarski tied a Lynn Stadium record as she had a career-best three assists in the win over Detroit Mercy. The Cardinals defense did not allow a single shot on goal and only three shots total on the night. Erynn Floyd and Brielle Baker combined for the clean sheet, the second in the first three games this season.
Freshman Nicole Jodoin started the scoring early in the third minute after jumping on a loose ball and beating the keeper. It was Jodoin's first career goal as she has started in all three games to begin her collegiate career.
Just a few minutes later, another Cardinal tallied her first career goal. Karsyn Cherry got it all started and fed the ball up to Swinarski, who then found a cutting AG Gibson into the box. Gibson fired a left-footed shot across the keeper and into the back of the net for her first career goal and put the Cards up 2-0.
The first career goals kept coming as Grace Maddox was next to net her first career tally. Coming off a corner kick from Swinarski, Maddox volleyed a rebound into the back of the net for her first career goal and upped the Louisville lead to 3-0.
One of the captains was next to find the scoresheet as Karsyn Cherry was dangerous on a set piece once again. Coming off a season where five of her six goals came from set pieces, she took advantage of one in the 20th minute. Emma Kate Schroll had a free kick from distance and Cherry found an open spot in the box and sent her header into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and put the Cards up 4-0.
In the 35th minute, the Cardinals lead grew to 5-0 after an own goal from Detroit Mercy.
The Cards had one more goal in the first half and it came from their leading goal scorer from last season. Geigle sent a header into the back off the net after a cross from Taylor Morris and gave the Cardinals a 6-0 lead into the half.
It only took less than a minute into the second half before the Cards scored again. Betsy Huckaby scored her first goal of the season coming off Swinarski's third assist of the season and the Cardinals were up 7-0.
The final goal of the night came in the 86th minute as Geigle tallied her second of the night off the helper from Emersen Jennings. The goal sealed the 8-0 win for the Cards and improved their record to 2-1 on the young season.
The Louisville homestand continues this weekend as the Cardinals welcome Wright State to Lynn Stadium on Sunday, August 24. The Cardinals and the Raiders will square off at 7 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
