The Cardinals have scored seven or more goals in back-to-back games for the first time in program history
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team (3-1-0) offense stayed hot at home as they came away with a 7-2 win over Wright State (1-2-0) Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals scored seven goals or more for the second-straight game as they have tallied 15 goals over the past two games. It is the first time in program history they have scored seven or more goals in back-to-back games.
Five different players score on the night with seven players logging at least one assist. The Cardinals tallied 10 assists total, setting a Lynn Stadium record for most assists in a single game. The previous record was eight, which was set last Thursday against Detroit Mercy.
Junior Liza Suydam tallied her first and second goals with the Cardinals in the win for her fifth career multi-goal game. Freshman Karina Peat tallied her first brace as she scored her first and second collegiate goals on the night. Amelia Swinarski tied a Lynn Stadium record for the second-straight game as she tallied three assists to lead the team. Mackenzie Geigle tallied a career high with four points after a goal and two assists. Karsyn Cherry also tied a career high in points with three after a goal and an assist.
Suydam got the scoring started in the seventh minute as she put home the rebound for her first goal as a Cardinal. Geigle set the play up with a through ball to Swinarski and her initial shot was saved but Suydam was there to put home the rebound.
Cherry scored her second goal in as many games in the 11th minute after she crossed up a defender in the box and fired a shot by the Raiders keeper. Swinarski got her second helper on Cherry's goal as she sent the cross into the box.
Freshman Nicole Jodoin scored her second goal of the season in the 17th minute to increase the Louisville lead. Emma Kate Schroll played a ball right on the end line back into the box and Geigle was able to find Jodoin, who snuck her shot past a few deflections from Wright State defenders and into the back of the net.
It would be Geigle to make it on the scoresheet next for her team-leading third goal of the season in the 23rd minute. Swinarski sent a corner kick towards the back post where Geigle was left unmarked and she volleyed the cross past the keeper for the goal.
Moments after entering the game in the 27th minute, Peat scored her first collegiate goal. Emerson Jennings was streaking down the left side and sent a low ball into the box for Peat, who found the back of the net for the goal.
Less than two minutes later, it was Peat again for her second goal of the match. It was Betsy Huckaby on the corner and Cherry was able to send the service out to Peat and her volley got past the keeper for her first career brace. With her second goal, Louisville took a 6-1 lead into the half.
The final score of the night came for Suydam to collect a brace of her own. Taylor Morris stayed with the ball in the box following a slide tackle from a Wright State defender. Once she made it around the defender, her service found Suydam and she rocketed her shot under the top bar for her second goal of the match and clinched the 7-2 win for the Cards.
Louisville remains at home as it continues the current six-game homestand. Up next for the Cardinals is a visit from USC Upstate, set for Thursday, August 28. The Cardinals and the Spartans will square off at 3 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
