Cardinals Drop Second Straight to Wake Forest
May 16, 2025 | Baseball
Louisville took a 5-4 loss on Friday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 21st-ranked University of Louisville baseball team lost 5-4 to Wake Forest in the penultimate game of the regular season on Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (34-20, 14-15 ACC) is riding a season-long five-game losing streak heading into the regular season finale. The final game of the 2025 regular season is set for Saturday at noon ET.
The Cardinals found themselves with a one-run lead after six innings for the second consecutive day. However, Wake Forest once again took the lead on a homer in the seventh inning and went on to secure the victory.
Louisville grabbed a run in the first on a Zion Rose sacrifice fly to plate the game's first run.
Wake Forest (36-18, 16-13) had an immediate answer though, hitting a pair of solo homers in the second to move out in front.
Alex Alicea tied the game up at two in the third, plating George Baker with a single to right. One inning later, Tague Davis lifted a double off the wall in left field to drive in Jake Munroe to put the Cards back on top.
Tucker Biven turned in his best collegiate start on Friday. The right-hander allowed the two solo home runs in the second, but those would be the only blemishes against him in a career-best five innings of work.
Biven faced the minimum over his final three innings, including a stretch of five consecutive strikeouts.
Wake Forest took a two-run lead in the seventh on the three-run homer, but the Cardinals still had multiple chances over the final three innings.
Garret Pike got one of the runs back right away, grounding a ball to first that brought Alicea home from third in the bottom of the seventh.
The Cardinals then got a leadoff double from Tagger Tyson to start the ninth. However, they were unable to get the tying run home.
Alicea had the only multi-hit effort of the day for the Cardinals, going 3-for-5 at the plate.
