LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball team picked up a 7-2 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (4-1) secured its third straight victory with the win in game two of the series. The Cardinals will go for the series sweep on Monday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
Parker Detmers was excellent on the mound Sunday, working a career-best six innings with just an unearned run allowed. The right-hander also struck out a career-high nine.
The Cardinals opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second. Matt Klein led off the frame with a triple off the centerfield wall and scored the first run of the day on a bunt from Garret Pike. Tagger Tyson drove home the second run with the first of his two doubles of the day.
Western Michigan (0-6) pushed a run across in the third via a passed ball, but Detmers kept the Cards in front with a pair of strikeouts.
Alex Alicea extended Louisville's lead in the fifth, dropping a ball inside the right field line for a run-scoring triple that scored Tague Davis.
The Broncos got back within one on a wild pitch in the seventh, however Justin West was about to strand the tying run on third to keep Louisville in front.
The Cards finally broke the game open with two outs in the bottom half of the seventh. Alicea delivered a two-out single to drive in Bayram Hot, and Zion Rose broke the game open with a three-run homer onto the berm in left field.
West then struck out the opening batter in the eighth before handing the ball off to Jack Brown. The freshman retired all five batters he faced to close out the win.
Alicea, Klein, Tyson and Jake Munroe all had multiple hits for the Cards. The three Louisville arms combined for 14 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
