Liza Suydam scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Louisville women's soccer team (10-3-1, 3-2-1 ACC) trailed for most of the match but a late equalizer earned the Cardinals a point after a 1-1 draw with No. 13 Wake Forest (9-2-3, 3-1-2 ACC) Thursday night at Spry Stadium.
The Cardinals did not have a shot on goal in the second half until the 82nd minute when Liza Suydam scored to pull the Cardinals even at 1-1. It was Suydam's sixth goal of the season and she has recorded a point in four of her last five games.
It was a slow start offensively for both teams and the first shot was not recorded until the 11th minute of the match. Wake Forest had the first two shots of the match and they were both saved by Erynn Floyd. Louisville did not record its first shot until the 20th minute.
Wake Forest opened the scoring in the 30th minute. The Demon Deacons first shot was deflected off the far post and sent back into the box. Allie Flannigan was first to the ball and she volleyed the loose ball into the back into the net and gave the Demon Deacons a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Cardinals did not record a shot on goal until the 82nd minute but they made it count.
Amelia Swinarski played a ball into the box and it was a scramble for the ball by Betsy Huckaby and a pair of Demon Deacon defenders. Huckaby was able to send the ball towards the middle of the box. Suydam was there with a left-footed volley in the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Suydam's shot was the last shot on goal by either team as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
