Bard will compete in two international friendlies
CHICAGO — University of Louisville freshman defender Ella Bard has been called up to the U.S U19/U18 Women's National Team for a pair of upcoming international friendlies, U.S. Soccer announced Friday afternoon. Bard will travel to Portugal from Oct. 20-29 for training camp and matches against the Republic of Ireland and Portugal's U-19 teams.
This is the first U.S. women's national team call up for Bard as she is one of five currently collegiate players that have been named to the team. Bard is in her freshman season with the Cardinals and has played in 12 matches and made seven starts. She made her collegiate debut against No. 17 Vanderbilt and earned her first career start against Wright State.
Bard has played all 90 minutes in four matches this season, three of those were clean sheet wins over USC Upstate, Coastal Carolina and Dayton. She played all 90 minutes on the road against No. 2 Notre Dame and she recorded her first career assist against the second-ranked Irish.
Bard will be with the Cardinals for their match against No. 3 Virginia this weekend at Lynn Stadium before heading over to Portugal. She will miss the road match against NC State but should return stateside for the Cardinals regular season finale against SMU on Oct. 30.
