The Cardinals picked up a 5-2 victory over the Seminoles on Friday.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Louisville baseball team rebounded for a 5-2 victory over No. 12 Florida State on Friday night in Tallahassee, Fla.
Louisville (17-10, 3-5 ACC) evened up the series with the win, handing Florida State its first home loss of the season. The rubber game of the weekend is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard right away on Friday night, scoring in each of the first two innings.
Zion Rose reached on a fielding error to start the game and moved to third on a Dylan Hoy sacrifice bunt before scoring the opening run on a wild pitch.
Louisville would take advantage of sloppy FSU defense again in the second. Gavin Kilen got on with one away on another error before Logan Beard laced a 1-0 pitch over the tall wall in right-centerfield for his fifth home run of the season.
Evan Webster cruised through his first inning on just eight pitches and got a pair of strikeouts in the second to strand two runners. The southpaw pitched around a two-out hit in the third before running into a little trouble in the fourth.
Florida State (21-4, 4-4) got two singles to put runners on first and second with one out. Webster notched a big strikeout for the second out, however the next hitter lined a single into left. Eddie King Jr. fielded the ball on one hop and unleashed a perfect throw to the plate to cut down the runner and end the threat.
The Seminoles fourth error of the night pushed Louisville's fourth run of the game across in the fifth and King delivered a two-out double to make it 5-0 at the halfway point.
Webster put together perfect innings in the fifth and sixth, racking up his seventh and eighth strikeouts to end his sixth inning of work.
Florida State finally knocked Webster out of the game after a leadoff triple and walk in the seventh. Tucker Biven entered and immediately extinguished the rally. His first pitch was rolled to shortstop where Kilen started a 6-4-3 double play and a soft flyout by the following hitter limited the Seminoles to just one run in the inning.
Biven rolled quickly through the eighth and came back out to close it down in the ninth. The right-hander gave up a two-out RBI single and had the tying run come to the plate, but a weak groundout gave the Cardinals the victory.
Webster (3-1) matched his career-long outing with six innings of one-run ball, setting a new career high with eight strikeouts. Biven worked the final three innings for the save.
