The Cardinals took a 9-4 loss on the road Saturday.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Louisville baseball team took a 9-4 loss at No. 12 Florida State in the series finale on Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.
Louisville (17-11, 3-6 ACC) registered double digit hits for the 15th time on the season but pushed just four runs across the plate.
Florida State (22-4, 5-4) took advantage of a leadoff single and a pair of wild pitches to get the game's opening run in the first inning.
The Cardinals answered back though, as Gavin Kilen and Eddie King Jr. each singled with two outs in the second. Isaac Humphrey then sent a ball up the middle that was fielded by the shortstop, but Humphrey beat the throw to first and Kilen came all the way around from second to tie the game.
Louisville grabbed its first lead of the day in the third. Zion Rose opened the inning with a triple into the left-centerfield gap and Dylan Hoy brought him home with a groundout.
The Seminoles grabbed the lead back with a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning, but the Cardinals had another answer in the fourth. Luke Napleton drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on Gavin Kilen's double. King then capitalized on the scoring chance with a groundball that plated Napleton.
However, the Seminoles hit their second two-run homer of the day in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.
Carson Liggett kept FSU off the scoreboard for the next two innings before the Seminoles finally tacked on three insurance runs with two outs in the seventh.
Louisville used a passed ball in the eighth to get a run back, however it was all the Cardinals would get over the final five innings.
Riley Phillips (1-2) allowed five runs on five hits over four innings in the start.
Kilen turned in a three-hit day, doubling twice and scoring once. Humphrey added a two-hit day of his own.
Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Lexington for the first of two games against Kentucky. The first Battle of the Bluegrass game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
