Louisville lost 8-3 on Thursday night in Tallahassee, Fla.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Louisville baseball team took an 8-3 loss on Thursday night in the series opener at No. 12 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.
Louisville (16-10, 2-5 ACC) held an early lead, but saw the Seminoles score eight of the final nine runs for the win.
The Cardinals jumped on the board in the second inning on Thursday, as Isaac Humphrey hit a towering home run over the right-centerfield wall for his fourth long ball of the season.
One inning later, JT Benson singled through a drawn-in infield to plate Dylan Hoy and give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
Florida State (21-3, 4-3) got an unearned run in the third and then tied the game with a run-scoring knock in the fourth.
In the fifth, the Seminoles loaded the bases with only one out. Following a pitching change, FSU greeted the new pitcher with an opposite-field grand slam to take its first lead of the night.
The Cardinals got a run back in the sixth on a Luke Napleton RBI single and then had a chance to get even closer in the seventh.
Louisville loaded the bases with nobody out on a pair of singles and a walk. However, a new Florida State pitcher entered and extinguished the rally with consecutive strikeouts and a groundout to keep it a three-run game.
FSU then put the game away with two more runs in the seventh and kept the Cardinals off the board over the next two frames.
Hoy was the only Louisville player with multiple hits on the night, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Sebastian Gongora (3-2) took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) over 4.1 innings.
Louisville and Florida State continue their series on Friday with first pitch set for 6 p.m. ET.
