Cardinals Down Lipscomb in Midweek Series Opener
March 12, 2024 | Baseball
Louisville picked up a 12-7 victory on Tuesday.
Louisville (11-5) tallied double digit runs for the 10th time in the last 12 games.
The Cardinals got on the board first with a JT Benson RBI double in the first inning but spent much of the first half of the game playing from behind.
Lipscomb (3-12) put single runs up in the second and third to take the lead before Gavin Kilen and Matt Klein had consecutive sacrifice flies in Louisville's half of the third to give the Cards the lead back.
However, the Bisons responded with four runs in the top of the fourth to open up a 6-3 edge.
Louisville got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, but a Lipscomb solo homer in the fifth extended the margin back to two.
Ryan McCoy erased the deficit with one swing in the bottom of the fifth, launching a 3-2 pitch over the scoreboard in right-centerfield to tie the game at seven.
Benson gave the Cardinals the lead with a sac fly in the sixth and Kilen stretched the lead out with a two-run shot later in the inning. The homer was the fourth in the last five games for the sophomore shortstop.
Dylan Hoy added an RBI knock in the seventh and Kilen capped off a strong day with another run-scoring hit in the eighth.
Meanwhile, Will Koger (1-0) was dominant on the mound over the final four innings. The junior allowed just two baserunners during his four-inning stint, each of which were erased with double plays.
Patrick Forbes made the start for the Cardinals, giving up just an unearned run in two innings of work.
McCoy was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in two and scoring three times. Kilen finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Rose, Hoy and Lucas Moore each had two hits of their own.
Louisville and Lipscomb wrap up their two-game series with an 11 a.m. ET start for Elementary School Day on Wednesday.
