Cards Knock Off No. 25 Cal, 2-1
October 20, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Mackenzie Geigle tallied her second brace of the season in the win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team bounced back with a 2-1 win over No. 25 Cal Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-6-3 overall and are 6-2-2 at home this season.
Mackenzie Geigle had another strong game for the Cardinals as she collected her second brace of the season. She opened the scoring early on in the first half and put the Cardinals back in front in the final minutes of the first half. She now leads the team with seven goals and 17 points this season.
The scoring opened in the 13th minute as Geigle began the play and sent the ball out to Brooke Dardano out left. She made a run up the left side and sent a cross towards the far post. Geigle beat the Cal defender and goalie to the ball and was able to deflect it into the back of the net. It was Dardano's team-leading seventh assist of the season. The seven assists are tied for fifth-most by a Louisville player in a single season.
The Louisville lead did not last long as Cal tied the game just minutes later. They scored off a free kick that was placed just outside the box. With the equalizer, the score was tied 1-1 just 14 minutes into the match.
That was most of the action in the first half until the final minutes before the break.
In the 42nd minute, Brooklyn got the play started by beating a Cal defender to a loose ball outside of the box. She played the ball over to Geigle, who was at the top of the box. After settling the pass, she sent a right-footed shot that deflected off the far post and in. It was her second goal of the match and was Lee's second assist of the season and put the Cards back in front at 2-1.
In the second half, Cal upped the pressure on offense in hopes of finding the equalizer once again. The Louisville defense stood tall and only allowed two shots on goal in the second half and Erynn Floyd was there to make the save each time to clinch the win. Floyd had another strong game in net with five saves, her fourth-straight game with five saves or more.
The Cards get set for their final home game of the regular season to cap off the four-game homestand. The Cardinals welcome Boston College to Lynn Stadium for a Thursday night matchup. It will be senior night for the Cardinals and they are set to honor Brooke Dardano, Amber Jackson, Ava Nielsen and Jolie St. Louis prior to Thursday's match.
