Cardinals Drop Heartbreaker to No. 6 Stanford, 1-0
October 17, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Stanford scored with three seconds left in the match
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team looked to have another impressive draw against a Top-15 team locked up but ultimately fell to No. 6 Stanford 1-0 Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinal connected on the game's lone goal with three seconds remaining to come away with the win.
It was a slow offensive half for both teams as they only had one shot on goal each over the first 45 minutes. Stanford's best chance came off a corner kick in the 24th minute. After the ball bounced around a bit, Jasmine Aikey put a shot on frame but Erynn Floyd was on the spot for the save.
In the second half, the Cardinal were on the doorstep in the 58th minute. A cross came into the box and Stanford got a header that deflected off a defender and towards goal. Floyd had to dive to her left to punch the ball away and clear away the opportunity for the Cardinal.
Over the final 10 minutes, Stanford really pushed forward in the offensive third in looks of the go-ahead goal.
Charlotte Kohler had a chance in the 83rd minute off a deflection and she fired a shot straight on goal. Floyd was positioned well and deflected the shot away and it was cleared by the Louisville defense. Kohler had another chance in the 88th minute but was there to make the save again.
In the final seconds, the Cardinals sent a ball in from midfield and after a deflection, it was at the feet of Lumi Kostmayer. She took it with her left foot off the volley and snuck it under the bar for the goal and clinched the win for Stanford.
Louisville will be back in action when another ACC newcomer comes to Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals welcome 25th-ranked Cal to Louisville for a Sunday matinee match. The Cardinals and Golden Bears will square off at 12 p.m. ET and the match will be aired nationally on the ACC Network.
