Louisville pitching struck out 14 on Saturday.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Louisville baseball team lost the middle game of the weekend series at No. 10 Virginia 4-1 on Saturday evening.
Louisville (29-21, 9-17 ACC) struck out 14 batters in the loss, the third most in a game this season and the seventh time the Cardinals have struck out at least 14 this spring.
Tate Kuehner (2-3) made the start on the mound for the Cardinals, going 4.2 innings with just four hits and two earned runs allowed. The southpaw set a new career-high on Saturday with nine strikeouts.
Kaleb Corbett handled the final 3.1 innings for the Cards. Corbett struck out a season-best five batters in the outing, allowing just one hit in his scoreless relief work.
Virginia (40-11, 15-11) plated the first run of the game with a solo home run in the third, but the Cardinals answered back in the fourth.
JT Benson and Jack Payton combined to tie the score with Payton picking up his 37th RBI of the year as part of a two-hit night.
The Cavaliers grabbed the lead back with a two-out RBI single in the fourth, however Isaac Humphrey kept it at just a one-run margin by throwing a potential second run out at the plate to end the inning.
Virginia then took advantage of some sloppy defense from the Cards in the fifth, plating a pair of unearned runs.
Louisville got a runner on in three of the final four innings, including bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth but were unable to push anything across.
Louisville wraps up the weekend in Charlottesville on Sunday with first pitch at 1 p.m. ET.
