Cardinals Drop Finale at No. 10 Virginia

Louisville lost 8-3 on Sunday in Charlottesville.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Louisville baseball team lost the finale at No. 10 Virginia 8-3 on Sunday.
Louisville (29-22, 9-18 ACC) saw its losing streak extend to seven.
Virginia (41-11, 16-11) jumped on the board first for the third consecutive game, plating three runs in the opening frame before adding two more in the second.
The Cavaliers tacked on another run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to lead 8-0 through six.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the seventh. Eddie King Jr. lifted a ground-rule double out to right-centerfield that scored Jack Payton and Ryan McCoy, who had both reached to start the inning. Logan Beard brought King in later in the frame with a groundout.
Louisville threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with one out but were unable to get the tying run to the plate.
Carson Liggett (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up six runs over 3.1 innings. Kayden Campbell and Evan Webster each turned in scoreless innings of relief work.
Payton tallied his second consecutive 2-for-4 day at the plate, boosting his team-leading batting average to .383. King also recorded two hits in the loss.
Louisville returns to Jim Patterson Stadium for the final four games of the regular season. The Cardinals will host Northern Kentucky on Tuesday night with first pitch set for 6 p.m. ET.
