Louisville took a 6-5 loss in Thursday’s opener.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 19th-ranked University of Louisville baseball team lost the opening game of its weekend series against No. 12 Miami 6-5 on Thursday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (27-14, 8-11 ACC) has now lost four consecutive ACC games by one run and seven one-run games against conference opponents overall.
The Cardinals trailed 5-2 after a run in the top of the sixth inning before a three-run rally knotted the game up. Brandon Anderson singled into left field and Ryan McCoy beat the throw to the plate for the first run before Eddie King Jr. doubled into the left field corner to plate the tying runs.
Miami (27-15, 13-9) cashed in a leadoff walk in the eighth, getting a pinch-hit two-out single to plate the eventual game-winning run.
Facing one of the top closers in the country, the Cardinals threatened in the ninth. Isaac Humphrey drew a one-out walk and Gavin Kilen singled to put a pair of runners on. A fielder's choice recorded the second out, but McCoy worked a walk to load the bases. However, a strikeout ended the ballgame.
Tucker Biven made his first career start on Thursday. The freshman gave up a leadoff home run but settled in and followed with four scoreless innings. The right-hander finished with two earned runs allowed in 4.1 innings of work.
Anderson and King each tallied two hits on the night to lead the Cardinals, who outhit Miami 9-6 on the day.
Louisville and Miami continue their series on Friday with a 6 p.m. ET first pitch.
