The Cardinals lost 3-0 on Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The eighth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team lost its second straight game with a 3-0 defeat against No. 2 Wake Forest on Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (25-9, 7-7 ACC) was shut out for just the second time this season. The Cardinals will wrap up the weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
After a high scoring Friday night, Saturday's contest was about pitching.
Wake Forest (31-4, 14-2) hit a solo home run leading off the third and threatened to blow the game open with the bases loaded and only one out. However, Patrick Forbes caught a fly ball toward the left field line and unleashed a perfect throw to the plate to cut down the runner and keep it a 1-0 game.
The Demon Deacons added another leadoff homer in the fourth and pushed their final run across in the fifth.
Louisville got singles from Forbes and Logan Beard in the bottom of the fifth to bring the tying run to the plate, however Christian Knapczyk was retired after a 10-pitch battle.
The Cardinals got a runner on in the seventh and ninth innings but were unable to bring the tying run up over the final four frames.
Riley Phillips (4-1) allowed three runs over 4.1 innings in his first start since late February. Greg Farone pitched 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
