Cardinals Split Doubleheader at Notre Dame
March 26, 2023 | Baseball
Louisville lost 5-4 in the opener before winning 2-1 in the second game on Sunday.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The second-ranked University of Louisville baseball team split a pair of games at Notre Dame on Sunday.
Louisville (19-4, 3-3 ACC) took a 5-4 loss in the opener before bouncing back for a 2-1 victory in the second half of the double dip.
Like they did in Friday's series opener, the Cardinals got early offense to move in front in Sunday's first game.
Christian Knapczyk jumped on the first pitch of the game and launched it over the right field wall for his first home run of the season.
Eddie King Jr. plated a second run with a single in the fourth and Logan Beard made it a 3-0 game with a solo homer leading off the fifth.
Notre Dame (12-9, 4-5) put together a big inning in its half of the fifth though, and that would be the difference in game one. Three fifth inning home runs accounted for five runs and gave the Irish a two-run lead.
The Cardinals threatened in each of the next three innings. JT Benson drew a walk and stole second with two outs, but Gavin Kilen's potential extra base hit was robbed by a diving play at first to end the sixth.
In the seventh, Louisville loaded the bases with one out. However, Brandon Anderson's liner found the glove of the first baseman who was able to double the runner off first to end the threat.
The Cards loaded the bases again in the eighth and Tyeler Hawkins drew a four-pitch walk to cut the deficit to just one. A groundout would end the inning though, as the Cardinals left nine runners on.
Louisville took an early lead for the third time in as many games in the nightcap. Anderson doubled to lead off the third inning and came around to score on a groundout from Ryan McCoy.
Notre Dame answered with a run-scoring groundout of its own in the fourth, but the Cardinals cut down a potential go-ahead run at the plate and kept the gave even at one.
The game-winning run came across in the sixth for the Cards. Benson singled with one out before stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch. Will Cook then drew a walk and Isaac Humphrey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Will Vierling took advantage of the situation, taking an 0-1 pitch off the leg to force the decisive run home.
Carson Liggett (5-0) stayed perfect on the season with just one run allowed on three hits over five innings. Tate Kuehner took care of the last four innings, allowing just one baserunner for his third save of the year.
Knapczyk had five hits on the day, coming up a triple shy of the cycle in the opening game and tallying multiple hits in both contests.
Louisville continues its seven-game road trip with a non-conference tilt at Cincinnati on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
