Cardinals Drop Opening Game at Notre Dame
March 24, 2023 | Baseball
Louisville took a 4-3 loss in Friday’s series opener.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The second-ranked University of Louisville baseball team took a 4-3 loss against Notre Dame in the weekend opener on Friday.
The loss is just the third of the season for Louisville (18-3, 2-2 ACC). The series is scheduled to continue on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.
The Cardinals held an early lead on Friday, plating a pair of runs in the second inning. Patrick Forbes reached on a leadoff walk and Isaac Humphrey singled with one out. Gavin Kilen delivered the big hit in the inning, singling through the right side with two outs to drive home both runners and put Louisville in front 2-0.
Ryan Hawks (4-1) cruised through the first four innings, striking out six and allowing just three hits. The right-hander ran into trouble in the fifth though, as Notre Dame (11-8, 3-4) strung together four hits and took a 3-2 lead.
Louisville answered right back in the sixth, getting some help from the Irish along the way. Humphrey reached with a two-out walk and then a wild throw to first base on a ball in play by Will Cook got down the right field line and allowed Humphrey to score all the way from first to tie the game at three.
However, the game wouldn't remain tied long. Notre Dame jumped back in front with a solo home run on the second pitch of its half of the sixth, which would ultimately prove to be the difference in the game.
Trying to come from behind again, the Cardinals ran into some tough luck at the plate in the final three innings. In the seventh, a Ryan McCoy liner knocked the glove off the first baseman, but the ball ricocheted to the second baseman who made the play to end the inning.
In the ninth, Kilen singled with one down and Logan Beard looked like he had a single of his own up the middle. However, the ball deflected off the pitcher's foot and the shortstop made a diving stop and was able to get the force out to keep the tying run on first base. A deep fly was then run down in the gap to end the game.
Hawks took his first loss of the season, allowing the four runs on eight hits over five-plus innings. Evan Webster handled 0.2 innings, while Tucker Biven was scoreless for 2.1 out of the bullpen.
Knapczyk and Kilen each recorded two-hit games for the Cards.
