Louisville Men Lead, Women are Second After Day 1 at SMU Classic

DALLAS -- After the first day of racing at the 2023 SMU Classic, the University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team leads the field and the Cardinal women are second.

UofL men scored 165 points to lead the field, followed by Auburn (157), Texas (143), Southern California (138), Missouri (117) and SMU 117. The Louisville women (171) trail only Southern California (175) ahead of Auburn (155), Missouri (123), SMU (104) and Miami (100).

In the first race of the evening, The Cardinal men were into the wall first as Dalton Lowe (46.70), Denis Petrashov (51.62), Mateo Miceli (46.75) and Matias Santiso (42.69) put up the winning time of 3:07.76. The UofL women touched third in the 400 Medley Relay. The Cardinal foursome of Tristen Ulett (54.88), Ella Welch (1:00.55), Gabi Albiero (51.22) and Christiana Regenauer (48.05) put up a time of 3:34.70. The event was won by USC's A-relay with a time of 3:30.90.

In the 400 IM, Kim Herkle touched second with a time of 4:09.46. USC's Justina Kozan won the event in 4:07.60. SMU's Jack Hoagland won the men's 400 IM with a time of 3:45.39. Louisville's Jackson Millard was second with a time of 3:47.58. Tommy Bried was ninth with a 3:51.90 for the Cards.

In the 200 freestyle, Louisville's Murilo Sartori won with a time of 1:34.68 and teammate Gustavo Saldo was seventh with a time of 1:35.92. On the women's side, USC's Minna Abraham was into the wall first with a time of 1:43.53. Louisville's Paige Hetrick was second in 1:45.41. Tristen Ulett was ninth overall with a time of 1:48.07. Â

In the 50 freestyle, Louisville's Gabi Albiero won with a time of 21.75. Christiana Regenauer put up a 22.33. On the men's side, Auburn's Kalle Makinen put up the winning time of 19.66. Louisville's Matias Santiso was fourth with a time of 19.97 and Dalton Lowe went 19.89.

Louisville diver Else Praasterink squeaked out a win on the 3M springboard, posting a mark of 297.55. For the Cardinal men, Rayce Winn was fifth 303.00.

Cardinal Gabi Albiero notched her second win with a 51.16 to touch first in the 100 butterfly. Christiana Regenauer put up the seventh fastest time with a 52.52. In the men's 100 fly, Krzysztof Chmielewski of USC put up the winning time of 46.56. Louisville's Mateo Miceli was fourth with a time of 47.48 and teammate Gustavo Saldo was seventh with a time of 47.93.

Paige Hetrick was second in the 100 back when she boarded a 53.30 just behind Auburn's Ellie Waldrop's winning time of 52.63. Rye Ulett was eighth with a time of 54.16. In the men's 100 back, Dalton Lowe was the top Cardinals with a fourth place time of 46.51 and teammate Jackson Millard was 10th with a 47.95. Texas' Will Modglin was first with a 45.93.

In the 100 breaststroke, USC's Kaitlyn Dobler put up the winning time of 57.35. Louisville Kim Herkle was third with a 1:01.31. Cardinal Ella Welch was seventh, putting up a 1:00.51. Louisville's Denis Petrashov posted the win in the men's 100 breaststroke with a 51.95. Teammate Tommy Bried was 12th with a 56.96.

In the 800 Free Relay, USC's A-relay put up a 7:02.06 just ahead of Louisville's time of 7:09.47 posted by Tristen Ulett (1:48.61), Madie Hall (1:47.44), Rye Ulett (1:47.80), and an anchor by Paige Hetrick (1:45.62). The Louisville men pulled ahead of the field in their 800 Free Relay. Murilo Sartori (1:35.03), Gustavo Saldo (1:36.40), Matias Santiso (1:36.08) and Jackson Millard put up a 1:38.39 for the combined time of 6:25.95.
Event Format
The event features each team bringing eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Each swimmer may compete in three events per day, and events will be contested in two heats, with one swimmer from each school in each heat. Divers will compete on 1- and 3-meter. Scoring will be as follows: Individual: 16-13-12-11-10-9-7-5-4-3-2-1 Â and Relays: 24-20-18-16-14-12
