LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Former University of Louisville women's soccer student-athlete Chinyelu Asher helped the Jamaica Women's National Team qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Asher and Jamaica completed the group stage at the Concacaf W Championship with a 2-1-0 record to finish in second place in Group A. The runner-up group finish punched Jamaica's ticket into next year's World Cup to be played in Australia and New Zealand.
Jamaica defeated Mexico 1-0 in its opening match on July 4. Asher was in the starting lineup and played the full duration of the match in a 5-0 loss to the United States on July 7 and then subbed on late in Jamaica's 4-0 victory over Haiti on Monday.
Jamaica will now play Canada on Thursday in the semifinals of the Concacaf W Championship. The winner will advance to next Monday's final against the winner of the United States and Costa Rica. The loser will play in the third-place match Monday.
The champion will qualify for both the 2024 Paris Olympics and the inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup (CWGC), to be held in 2024.
The runner-up and third-place teams will also square off in a Concacaf Olympic play-in series, scheduled for September 2023. The winner of that play-in series will also qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2024 CWGC.
