Cards Finish Series with 5-5 Tie at Wake Forest
May 08, 2022 | Baseball
The two teams played even for 12 innings before hitting the travel curfew.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Four hours and 25 minutes of baseball came to a close on Sunday with the fifth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team taking home a 5-5 tie after 12 innings at Wake Forest.
Louisville (33-13-1, 15-8-1 ACC) had a 4:45 p.m. ET travel curfew, and with nothing decided after 12 innings, the Cardinals picked up their first tie since finishing 3-3 at Tulane on March 19, 2000.
Wake Forest (33-14-1, 11-12-1) scored first for the third consecutive day, plating a run in the bottom of the second inning.
The Cardinals answered back immediately, pushing three across in their half of the third. A throwing error scored the first run before Jack Payton gave UofL the lead on a groundout. Wake's second throwing miscue of the inning allowed a third run to touch the plate.
The Demon Deacons continued their defensive struggles in the fifth, with another error allowing a Louisville runner to cross the plate.
Wake Forest battled its way back in the middle innings. A solo homer and a bases loaded walk made it a one-run game in the sixth and another solo shot in the seventh tied the game at four.
Dalton Rushing gave the Cardinals the lead back in the eighth with a towering home run down the right field line. It was the 14th of the year and second of the weekend for the junior.
Louisville took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning, but a leadoff home run knotted the game up at five.
The two offenses were relatively quiet in the extra frames until Wake Forest threatened in the 12th. A leadoff single was followed by a pair of strikeouts, but a two-out knock and a balk put runners on second and third with two away.
Kade Grundy was about to work out of it though, getting a liner to left field that JT Benson secured to close out the game.
Brandon Anderson made his second start of his freshman season on Sunday, turning in a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate to go along with two walks. Anderson had three of Louisville's six hits, with Rushing adding a pair.
Carter Lohman was strong on the mound in his first weekend start of the season, allowing just one run on two hits over four innings. Carson Liggett and Adam Dowler each had scoreless outings out of the bullpen, while Grundy retired the only batter he faced in the 12th.
Louisville comes back home for a midweek contest against Indiana on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium.
