Cardinals Claim Series Opener at No. 3 Virginia Tech

Louisville secured an 8-1 victory on Friday in Blacksburg.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The sixth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team turned in an 8-1 victory at No. 3 Virginia Tech on Friday.
Louisville (35-13-1, 16-8-1 ACC) is now 4-0 this season against teams ranked in the top five after an earlier sweep of then-No. 1 Notre Dame.
After both teams failed to score in the opening inning, the Cardinals struck first with one swing in the second. Isaac Humphrey lined a 1-2 pitch off the bottom of the scoreboard in right-centerfield to give the Cards a 1-0 lead.
Virginia Tech (34-11, 14-9) nearly tied the game at one on the first pitch of the bottom half of the second, but Levi Usher went to the wall in centerfield and leapt to take away the potential tying swing. The Hokies were able to answer though, getting a two-out RBI single later in the frame to tie the game at one.
Louisville went in order in the third and Jared Poland retired the first hitter of the bottom of the inning before the rain set in and stopped the game. Following the 29-minute delay, Poland retired five of the next six batters he faced.
Poland gave up a leadoff single in the fifth, but Humphrey made a strong play in right, snaring a sinking liner and doubling off the runner at first base to end the inning.
The Cards edged back in front in the sixth. Cameron Masterman singled with one away and Chris Seng entered as a pinch-runner and proceeded to steal second base. Humphrey followed with a swinging strikeout, but the ball bounced away from the catcher, allowing Seng to score all the way from second.
Virginia Tech threatened after earning back-to-back walks to start the seventh, however Tate Kuehner entered with one away and got consecutive fly outs to end the frame.
Louisville found its insurance runs over the final two innings. The Cards got doubles from Jack Payton, Seng and Humphrey in the eighth to push two runs across. Dalton Rushing then launched his team-leading 16th homer of the season in the ninth to add another. Later in the ninth, Logan Beard drew a bases loaded walk to force home the sixth run and Brandon Anderson sent a single back through the middle to drive in the final two.
Poland (4-3) turned in another strong start on the bump, allowing just one run over 6.1 innings. Kuehner recorded his second save of the season with 2.2 scoreless frames to close out the win.
Humphrey was 3-for-4 on the day, driving in two and coming up just a triple shy of the cycle. Despite entering the game in the sixth inning, Seng scored three runs with a hit and a walk.
Louisville and Virginia Tech continue the three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and can be seen on ACC Network.
