The two will play a rubber game on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET.
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The sixth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team came up just short in its comeback effort in a 4-3 loss at No. 3 Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Louisville (35-14-1, 16-9-1 ACC) will go for the series victory on Sunday, with first pitch moved up to 11 a.m. ET due to potential inclement weather in the forecast.
One day after the Cards jumped on the board first via the long ball, it was Virginia Tech (35-11, 15-9) that flipped the script on Saturday. The Hokies got a two-run homer to start the scoring in the third and added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to hold a 3-0 edge.
Louisville finally broke through in the fifth, with Brandon Anderson cashing in on a run-scoring chance with a single back through the middle that plated Cameron Masterman for the first run.
The Cardinals chipped another run off the lead in the seventh, as Logan Beard went the other way for a RBI knock that scored Isaac Humphrey.
After four consecutive scoreless frames from the Louisville pitching staff, the Hokies found an insurance run with a two-out single in the eighth.
The extra run would prove beneficial because the Cardinals had one final rally in them in the ninth. Masterman and Humphrey each reached to put the tying runs on base with one away and Beard delivered his second RBI single of the day to make it a one-run game.
That was as close as the Cards would get however, as a fly ball and strikeout ended the game with the tying and go-ahead runs aboard.
Carter Lohman (1-1) turned in the second consecutive quality start for Louisville. The southpaw allowed just the three-run third among his six innings of work.
Masterman, Beard and Anderson all had two hits on the afternoon.
