Cardinals Claim 6-1 Victory in Opener at Boston College
March 25, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville improved to 4-0 in ACC play this spring.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The University of Louisville baseball team used a strong pitching effort and timely hits to pick up a 6-1 victory at Boston College on Friday.
Louisville (17-5, 4-0 ACC) has now won four straight to open up conference play after its sweep of No. 1 Notre Dame last weekend.
The series continues on Saturday, with first pitch moved up to noon ET.
It was a Friday night pitcher's duel as both starting pitchers kept the offenses off the scoreboard through the first four innings.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the fifth though, getting consecutive singles from Logan Beard, Isaac Humphrey and Ben Bianco to plate the first run. Ben Metzinger then added a single of his own to plate the game's second run.
Boston College (9-12, 1-6) cut Louisville's lead in half in the sixth, but Ryan Hawks entered with the tying run on third base and got a groundout to keep the Cards in front.
Louisville had an immediate answer in the seventh. Bianco went to straightaway centerfield for a two-out solo homer and Metzinger followed a Christian Knapczyk walk with a towering blast to left to make it a 5-1 game.
The UofL bullpen handled the rest from there with Hawks tossing a scoreless seventh, Garrett Schmeltz striking out all three hitters he faced in the eighth and Kyle Walter closing it down in the ninth.
Tate Kuehner (4-0) secured his fourth win with just one run allowed in 5.2 innings.
Beard, Humphrey and Bianco all had two-hit games, as the bottom three in Louisville's order combined to go 6-for-10 with four runs scored. Metzinger was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and his 10th homer of the year.
