Cardinals Secure Extra-Inning Win at Boston College
March 26, 2022 | Baseball
Louisville plated four runs in the 11th to win its fifth straight in ACC play.
Louisville (18-5, 5-0 ACC) has now won eight of its last nine games, including its first five in conference play.
The Cardinals will go for the three-game sweep on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. ET.
UofL was in the run column just two batters into Saturday's game, as Christian Knapczyk doubled on the first pitch of the game and Ben Metzinger followed with a run-scoring single. The Cardinals would struggle to get a clutch here from there though, leaving six runners on over the first four innings.
Boston College (9-13, 1-7) broke through in the fourth with a two-run homer giving the Eagles the lead and a RBI double making it a 3-1 game.
The BC lead wouldn't last long as Metzinger and Cameron Masterman reached to lead off the fifth and Dalton Rushing hit a towering fly over the wall in right to push the Cardinals back in front by a run.
Ben Bianco added to the lead with a run-scoring knock in the fifth and Metzinger scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to give Louisville a 6-3 edge.
The Eagles mounted a rally of their own in the seventh with a RBI double and two-run home run to knot the game up at six apiece.
Evan Webster came on and got a strikeout to end the seventh and then worked a perfect eighth before turning the ball over to Michael Prosecky. Prosecky kept the Cardinals alive with spotless ninth and 10th innings, setting the stage for the 11th.
Knapczyk singled off the pitcher to start the 11th inning and Metzinger lined a ball through the right side to put runners on the corners. Masterman then gave the Cards the lead with a groundball into right field.
Prosecky, who had been entered into the game in the fourth spot in the lineup, then went to the plate for the first time in his college career and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put the runners in scoring position. Levi Usher followed an intentional walk with one of the biggest swings of the day, driving a ball into left-centerfield to plate two more before Logan Beard stretched the margin to four with a sacrifice fly.
Prosecky took care of it from there, punching out a pair in his third consecutive perfect inning to secure the win.
Metzinger and Usher each had three hits on the day, with Metzinger reaching base five times and Usher driving in two and swiping three bases. Knapczyk and Bianco tallied two hits apiece.
