Phillips, Offense Lead Cardinals to Sweep at Boston College
March 27, 2022 | Baseball
The Cardinals have matched their best start in ACC play since joining the league in 2015.
Louisville (19-5, 6-0 ACC) has now swept each of its first two ACC weekends, matching the 2017 team for the program's best start in ACC play since joining the league in 2015.
Dalton Rushing set the tone for the day with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. It was the seventh of the season for the junior and second in as many days.
Riley Phillips (3-0) put a pair of scoreless innings together in the first and second and allowed his offense to go back to work in the third.
Walks loaded the bases for the Cardinals with one away and Jack Payton lined a single back through the middle to score a pair of runs and double Louisville's advantage.
The four runs would be more than enough for Phillips, who put things on cruise control. The southpaw retired 10 straight through the middle innings, including striking out the side in order in the fourth.
Phillips finished the day with a career-best seven shutout innings, facing just three over the minimum. The sophomore struck out seven and allowed just three hits.
The game remained 4-0 until the eighth when the Cardinals finally broke it open. Louisville sent 13 to the plate in the frame, plating nine runs to stretch its lead to a baker's dozen.
Isaac Humphrey and Ben Metzinger each had run-scoring singles in the inning, while Christian Knapczyk doubled in two and Cameron Masterman capped the scoring with a three-run home run onto the hillside in left field.
Masterman would then double home two more runs in the ninth, giving him a career-high five on the day.
Metzinger, Masterman, Payton and Humphrey each had two hits on the day as the Cardinals scored double digit runs for the 10th time on the season and sixth time in the last 10 games.
Louisville continues its eight-game road swing with a trip to Western Kentucky on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET in Bowling Green.
