Swimming and Diving Open Season With Xavier

Cards Host Musketeers Friday at 3 p.m.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville swimming and diving team opens their 2021-22 slate by hosting Xavier University 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1 at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.

Despite the challenges of competing during a pandemic, the Cardinals had a historic 2020-21 season highlighted by its first ever ACC Championship for the men and Nick Albiero winning his first NCAA Championship in the 200 fly and leading the Cardinals to their first-ever NCAA Relay Championship when the men won the 200 medley relay. Albiero earned ACC Swimmer of the Year and the Cards finished fifth at NCAAs. The men won seven gold medals at ACCs and produced nine All-American swims. The women finished 3rd at ACCs and 13th at NCAAs. Nick Albiero was named ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year and 21 Named as Academic All-ACC. In all, 31 Cardinals headed to the US Olympic Trials with alum Zach Harting making the USA Roster in the 200 butterfly. Murilo Sartorin (Brazil) Tatiana Salcutan, (Moldova), Grigory Tarasevich (Russia) and Andrej Barna (Serbia) also repped the Cards in Tokyo.

Xavier men's and women's swimming picked up seven event wins in the season-opening Butler Quad meet. The Musketeer women picked up three head-to-head wins in the meet that feature Saint Louis, Valpo and IUPUI in addition to Butler on the women's side, while the men went 2-1 while competing against Saint Louis, Valpo and IUPUI. Xavier last faced the Cardinals in October 2019, picking up a pair of event wins but falling on both sides. Jon Bernard collected one of the event wins, in the 100 breast.
