Albanese Drafted by Angels on Day Three of MLB Draft
July 13, 2021 | Baseball
Right-handed pitcher Glenn Albanese was selected in the 15th round by the Los Angeles Angels.
DENVER – Capping off yet another strong showing, the University of Louisville baseball program added Glenn Albanese on Tuesday to the list of student-athletes taken in the 2021 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Albanese was selected in the 15th round with the 441st overall pick by the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander was the seventh Louisville player drafted this year joining Henry Davis (round 1, pick 1, Pittsburgh Pirates), Alex Binelas (round 3, pick 86, Milwaukee Brewers), Cooper Bowman (round 4, pick 122, New York Yankees), Michael Kirian (round 6, pick 173, Washington Nationals), Lucas Dunn (round 8, pick 250, San Diego Padres), and Luke Brown (round 9, pick 253, Pittsburgh Pirates).
This marks the eighth time overall and seventh time in the last nine years Louisville has had at least seven players selected in the MLB draft. Louisville's seven selections were the second-most in the ACC in 2021.
Albanese was the Opening Day starter for the Cardinals in 2021, earning a victory over Bellarmine in the first game of the season. The Batavia, Ill., native battled injuries throughout the season though, posting a 3-1 record in four appearances. In his three starts this spring, Albanese was 3-0 with a 1.76 ERA.
For his career, Albanese was 4-2 overall in 17 trips to the mound with 45 strikeouts in 35.1 innings.
Louisville has now had 94 players selected in the MLB Draft during Dan McDonnell's coaching tenure, which began in 2007. Thirty-four of those selections have come in the first five rounds, with Davis becoming the ninth taken in the first round.
