May 15, 2021 | Baseball
The Cardinals lost 5-0 in Chapel Hill on Saturday.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the second consecutive day, the eighth-ranked University of Louisville baseball team came up on the short end of the ledger with a 5-0 loss Saturday at North Carolina.
It's the first time the Cardinals have been shut out since a 4-0 defeat against Georgia Tech on March 23, 2019. Louisville (26-17, 16-12 ACC) managed just three hits in the contest.
North Carolina (23-22, 16-16) put together a two-out rally in the second, getting a run-scoring single to plate the game's first run. The Tar Heels then pushed a pair of runs across with two outs in the third.
While its pitching staff kept the Cardinals off the board, UNC tacked on two more runs with a home run to right in the sixth to create the final margin.
Luke Seed (0-1) allowed three runs in just 2.2 innings on Saturday. Jared Poland turned in a career-long effort out of the bullpen, working 4.1 innings with two runs allowed and just one hit against him. Garrett Schmeltz recorded a scoreless frame in his lone inning of work.
The three-game series wraps up on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.
