Cardinals Soar Into Third After Day 2 Finals at ACC Championships

Cards win silver in 200 freestyle relay
The University of Louisville Cardinals moved up to third place with a strong showing on the second day of racing at the 2020 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Virginia holds the lead with 524.5 ahead of NC State's 497 followed by Louisville (404), Notre Dame (350), North Carolina (325), Florida State (253.5), Duke (250), Georgia Tech (190), Miami (175), Pitt (145), and Boston College 104.

In the first event of the evening, Maria Sumida won the B-final in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:44.27, a time placed sixth fastest in the event. Sophie Cattermole went 4:45.48 in the B-final. Madison Luther swam a 4:47.18, dropping 3 seconds off her prelim time in the C-Final of the 500 Freestyle

Molly Fears missed the podium in the 3M diving by just over a point. She posted a 318.90 318.90 the third best mark in Cardinal history to finish fourth. In men's 1M diving, Daniel Pinto put up a 300.95 score to finish fifth.

In the 200 IM A-Final, Abigail Hay had a fast second half to move into fifth with a 1:56.86. The freshman flew to the fifth fastest time in Cardinal history. Mariia Astashkina was sixth in the B-final going 1:59.33. Grace Oglesby stopped the clock in 1:59.70 in the B-final for seventh place and Diana Dunn finished third in the C-Final with a 1:59.70.

Casey Fanz posted the third best time in Cardinal history in the A-final of the 50 freestyle with a 21.89 and a fourth place finish. The mark was a 2019 invited time. Â Christiana Regenauer put up a 22.28 in the A-final, also a time that was invited last year. Arina Openysheva sprinted to a 22.26 A-finals for 7th place. Â Lainey Visscher touched third in the B Final with a time of 22.39. Nastja Govejsek touched 7th in the C-final with a time of 22.75.

The foursome of Lainey Visscher (22.44), Casey Fanz (21.50), Christiana Regenauer (21.88) and Arina Openysheva put up a 21.62 in an heroic anchor for the 1:27.44 for the silver medal in the final event of the night.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday morning with the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 400 medley relay and men's platform diving.
