January 10, 2020 | Baseball, Academic Services
The Cardinals completed their 17th consecutive semester with a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Coinciding with its best-ever finish on the diamond, the University of Louisville baseball program achieved record success in the classroom during the fall semester.
The Louisville baseball team wrapped up the fall semester with a 3.353 cumulative team grade point average, the highest semester GPA in program history. The Cardinals have now finished with a 3.0 or higher in 17 consecutive semesters.
Thirty-one student-athletes had a 3.2 GPA or better, with sophomore left-handed pitcher Carter Lohman leading the way with a perfect 4.0.
Junior right-handed pitcher Glenn Albanese, junior outfielder Trey Leonard and senior outfielder Danny Oriente are Chi Alpha Sigma members, reserved for student-athletes that have reached junior athletic standing and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or better.
In the program's internal academic competition, Team Mundorf took home the title with a 3.506 GPA. Team Mundorf consisted of Reid Detmers, Lucas Dunn, Leonard, Jack Perkins, Jared Poland, Blayne Robinson, Chris Seng, Gavin Sullivan, Kellan Tulio, Evan Webster and Kerry Wright.
The Cardinals also had five former student-athletes graduate during the fall commencement. Sam Bordner (2016-18), Colby Fitch (2015-17), Liam Jenkins (2018), Michael McAvene (2017-19) and Riley Thompson (2016-18) each received their degrees. All five are currently playing professional baseball.
The span of 17 straight semesters with a team GPA of 3.0 or better coincides with unparalleled success on the field for Louisville, which has four College World Series appearances, six NCAA Super Regional berths, eight NCAA Regional bids and seven conference championships during those eight seasons.
Louisville opens the 2020 season Feb. 14 with a three-game series on the road at Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss. The Cardinals' home opener is set for Feb. 19 against Wright State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
