Louisville lost 5-1 against Boston College on Wednesday at the 2019 ACC Baseball Championship.
DURHAM, N.C. – The seventh-ranked and top-seeded Louisville baseball team took a 5-1 loss against No. 12 seed Boston College on Wednesday at the 2019 ACC Baseball Championship. The tournament is being played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With the victory, Boston College (31-26) captured the top spot in Pool A and advances into the ACC Championship semifinals on Saturday. Louisville (43-14) still has a game on Thursday against eighth-seeded Clemson at 11:00 a.m., ET, but can't advance beyond pool play.
Nick Bennett made the start on Wednesday for the Cardinals, and registered three shutout innings working around baserunners. The junior stranded a pair of runners in the first with a strikeout, and kept BC off the board in the third after the Eagles put two on with only one out.
Boston College broke through in the fourth against Bryan Hoeing, getting a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to put them in front by a pair after four.
Louisville had 10 straight hitters retired between the third and sixth innings, but finally scratched a run across in the seventh. Tyler Fitzgerald drew a leadoff walk on four pitches and moved all the way to third on two BC errors on a failed pickoff. Logan Wyatt immediately cashed in the run-scoring opportunity with a groundout that cut the deficit in half.
The Eagles answered right back though, taking advantage of a two-out error by the Cardinals and turning it into two unearned runs to push the margin out to three at 4-1. BC tacked on another run in the eighth, leaving Louisville needing four in the ninth to keep the game going.
Lucas Dunn drew a walk to start the ninth and Jake Snider followed with a single. However, a double play stopped the momentum for the Cardinals and a strikeout ended the ballgame.
Hoeing (3-3) was hit with the loss, giving up two runs in his three innings of work. Michael Kirian allowed two unearned runs in one inning and Michael McAvene allowed a run in the eighth.
Louisville managed just three hits at the plate on Wednesday with Dunn, Snider and Justin Lavey tallying one each.
