Cardinals Take Second Loss at ACC Championship

Louisville was defeated 7-1 by Clemson on Thursday in Durham, N.C.
DURHAM, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Louisville baseball team was outdone by an outstanding pitching performance on Thursday, as the Cardinals were defeated 7-1 by Clemson at the 2019 ACC Baseball Championship. The tournament is being played at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Reid Detmers (11-3) was hit with just his third loss of the season on Thursday, allowing five runs on six hits across four innings. The sophomore picked up seven strikeouts on the day to give him 145 for the season, just one shy of Brendan McKay's single season record set in 2017.
Detmers cruised through the opening two innings, allowing just one baserunner in a pair of scoreless frames.
Clemson (34-24) moved in front in the third after two walks and a double loaded the bases with only one out. Detmers got a pop up for the second out of the inning, but a double off the left field wall plated the opening two runs. A good relay for the Cardinals cut down a third runner at the plate, but Clemson exited the inning with a 2-0 advantage.
The Tigers added a three-run homer in the fourth, a run-scoring single in the fifth and a solo shot in the seventh to stretch the margin out to seven.
Meanwhile, the Louisville offense struggled, as the first 22 hitters were retired. The Cardinals didn't get their first baserunner until the eighth inning when Alex Binelas drew a four-pitch walk. However, the offense remained hitless through eight innings.
The no-hit and shutout bid were thwarted with one swing in the ninth, as Zach Britton launched a long pinch-hit homer to lead off the inning and put the Cardinals on the board. The home run was the fifth of the season for the junior.
Britton's home run was the only hit of the day for the Cardinals. Shay Smiddy allowed a solo home run as the only blemish on his line over 2.1 innings. Jack Perkins and Adam Elliott each had scoreless outings.
The Cardinals will now await their postseason fate with the NCAA Tournament selection show set for Monday at noon ET on ESPNU. The 16 host sites for the tournament will be revealed on Sunday evening.
