Rally Comes Up Short for No. 8 Louisville
April 06, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals lost the first of three at Clemson 5-1 on Friday night.
CLEMSON, S.C. – For the second straight day, it was No. 13 Clemson getting the best of the eighth-ranked Louisville baseball team, as the Cardinals were defeated 6-3 on Saturday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Louisville (23-8, 9-5 ACC) offense brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but ended up dropping consecutive games for just the second time this season.
Nick Bennett (4-2) gave up five runs across five innings for his second loss. The lefthander allowed seven hits and walked two with five strikeouts.
Clemson (24-7, 11-3) found the scoreboard for the first time in the third inning. The first two hitters reached and a one-out single plated the opening run. Bennett was able to limit the damage though, getting a great effort behind him for a double play to end a bases loaded threat.
The Tigers doubled their advantage with a solo home run to lead off the fourth before creating some separation one inning later. A one-out double inside the third base bag put a run up in the fifth with a two-out, two-run single making it a 5-0 game three batters later.
Louisville finally broke through in the eighth inning, with a familiar name returning to the fold. With Alex Binelas on first after a leadoff single, Lucas Dunn stepped to the plate for his first plate appearance since March 8. The sophomore promptly hammered a 2-0 pitch off the right-centerfield wall for a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
Drew Campbell quickly cashed in the scoring chance with a line drive to right to plate Binelas. However, it was the only run the Cardinals would get in the inning.
UofL didn't go quietly into the night in the ninth though, making a run against the Clemson bullpen. Jake Snider singled with one out to start the rally and Trey Leonard was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Logan Wyatt then lashed a line drive into right field to bring Snider across the plate.
Binelas made it four straight hitters to reach with a walk that loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate. Zach Britton sent a ball to centerfield for a sacrifice fly to bring the Cardinals within three. Dunn then fought off four foul balls with two strikes before rolling out to second base to end the game.
Snider was 2-for-4 with a run at the plate to lead the Cardinals. Bryan Hoeing tossed the final three innings for UofL, giving up one run on four hits.
Louisville and Clemson will wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon ET.
