No. 7 Cardinals Open Series with 7-5 Win Over No. 22 Miami
April 18, 2019 | Baseball
The Cardinals picked up their seventh straight victory with the win Thursday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville (30-8, 14-5 ACC) has now won a season-best seven consecutive games and improved to 20-4 on its home turf this season.
The Cardinals pounded out 11 more hits on Thursday evening, marking the fifth straight game with at least 10 hits. During the seven-game winning streak, Louisville has averaged 11 runs on nearly 15 hits.
The series continues on Friday, with first pitch moved up two hours to 4:00 p.m., ET.
Reid Detmers (7-2) set the tone for the night, setting down the first nine Hurricanes that stepped to the plate. The offense then backed him up with three runs of support in the bottom half of the third inning.
Lucas Dunn beat out an infield single with one away and moved to second on a balk. Jake Snider then rolled a ball through the right side that brought Dunn to the plate for the game's first run. Two batters later, Logan Wyatt went to the deepest part of the field for his fifth home run of the season to make it a 3-0 game.
Miami (26-13, 10-9) answered right back though, putting a pair of runs of its own up in the top of the fourth. A two-run double with one away cut the Louisville lead to just one, but Detmers buckled down and got the next two hitters to keep the Cardinals in front.
UofL matched the Hurricanes in the bottom half of the frame, getting the two runs right back on a run-scoring single from Justin Lavey and Lucas Dunn's sacrifice fly.
The scoring continued to go back and forth in the fifth, with Miami tallying a solo homer in the top of the inning before Wyatt drove home Tyler Fitzgerald with a single in the bottom half. Wyatt added his fourth RBI of the night one inning later, working a walk with the bases loaded to plate Louisville's seventh run.
The Hurricanes plated a run in the seventh and another in the ninth, but the Cardinals were able to finish the night off with the victory.
Detmers allowed three runs over 5.2 innings for his seventh win of the season. The lefthander struck out seven on the game, giving him 101 for the year. Detmers is the 12th pitcher in program history to record 100 strikeouts in a season.
Bryan Hoeing and Michael Kirian combined to finish off the game, with Kirian notching his second save of the year.
The top of the order shouldered the bulk of the offensive load going 8-for-15 at the plate. Wyatt was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, giving him 14 RBIs in his last six games.
