Chad Scores Nine Goals in 23-13 Win at Duquesne
March 12, 2019 | Women's Lacrosse
Tessa Chad broke the school-record with nine goals.
Pittsburgh, Pa. - Tessa Chad scored nine goals to break the program record as University of Louisville women's lacrosse won 23-13 at Duquesne on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, the Cardinals improve to 3-6 on the year, while the Dukes suffered their first defeat of the season and fell to 4-1.
"We played extremely well today, especially coming off of short rest following a tough triple overtime loss to Duke just two days ago," said head coach Scott Teeter. "It was great to see us compete for 60 minutes. We also got a chance to play everyone, which will help us save our legs for another tough game on Thursday."
After Duquesne scored the first goal of the game, Louisville reeled off five goals in the next six minutes to pull ahead 5-1.Â
Chad scored twice during that span and then added three more goals, including back-to-back goals just inside the 10-minute mark of the first half to put the Cardinals ahead 10-4.
She then added another goal with one second left on the clock in the first half to give Louisville an 11-6 lead going into the break.
The Dukes pulled within 13-9 with 24:42 left to go in the game, but the Cardinals scored four straight goals to build a 17-9 lead and then cruised to the 23-13 victory.
After scoring six times in the first half, Chad added three more goals in the second stanza to finish with nine goals on just 11 shots.
With nine goals, she tied the NCAA record for most goals in a game this season and broke the UofL program record of eight goals by Bergan Foley vs. UC Davis on May 1, 2009.
"Tessa was on today and her teammates did a great job of drawing opponents off of her and then finding her in good spots to score," said Teeter. "When she's open, there aren't too many goalies out there than can stop her."
Alex McNicholas finished with a hat trick of her own, while Kayla Marshall, Ally Hall and Kirsten Parker had two goals each. Hall added a team-high three assists.
The 23 goals scored by the Cardinals also matched the program-record for most goals in a game.
Louisville finished with 32 shots on goal to Duquesne's 21, while winning draw controls, 23-14.Â
Next up, the Cardinals return home to host Cincinnati on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET.
