Cards Hold Off Vanderbilt in 5-4 Win

Haley Richards collects 17 saves, Ella Berg delivers two goals
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Haley Richards nabbed 17 saves in goal as the University of Louisville lacrosse team defeated Vanderbilt 5-4 in a tightknit affair, Wednesday afternoon inside UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
It was a defensive deadlock for the first seven-plus minutes of the game as neither team could generate offense. With 7:02 left in the first quarter Ella Berg ended the scoring drought and put the Cards (6-5) up 1-0.
Vandy's Logan Risenhoover answered back, tying the game at one all. A minute later Rian Adkins responded finding the back of the net thanks to an assist by Charlotte Jackson, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead after a quarter of play.
The defense continued to shine through in the second period, as neither team put points on the board almost halfway through the quarter. The Commodores (5-6) were the first to strike in the stanza, getting a goal by Gabby Putman to make the contest 2-2. Grayce Kitchen helped Louisville respond, sending one past the Vandy keeper and giving UofL a 3-2 lead heading into halftime.Â
With 7:09 left in the third period Vandy was penalized with a yellow card, as a result the Cards were rewarded a free-position attempt. Maggie McMahon successfully converted the attempt to make it a 4-2 Cardinals lead. Later in the quarter, Berg secured her second goal of the day to blossom the Louisville lead to 5-2.
Following a green card on the Cardinals, the Commodores were able to stop the bleeding and answer back with a goal from Anna Taraboletti. Louisville led 5-3 heading into the final quarter of play.
With 13:52 left in the game Vanderbilt's Shea Panzik scored a goal, making it a one-score contest. The two teams played scoreless lacrosse the rest of the way, as the Cards edged out a 5-4 home victory.
Berg's two goals led all scorers, and it also extends her season-long point streak to 11 games. Richards had 10 saves at half, finishing the matchup with 17. Richards (6-5) now has double-digit save performances in eight games this season, today marking the sixth time with 15+ stops.
Freshman Avery Johnston collected six ground balls to help the Cards finish with an 18-16 advantage in ground balls over Vandy. Johnston also led all Cardinals in caused turnovers with two. A game high three draw control victories by Olivia Scroggie helped UofL win the battle the circle by a slight 6-5 margin.
The Commodores were led in goal by Emme Martin (5-6) who had a double-digit save effort too, finishing with 10 stops on the day.
Louisville resumes Atlantic Coast Conference play hosting No. 19 Virginia at noon ET on Saturday inside UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
