Cards fall short 15-14 in overtime to No. 25 Pitt
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kaitlyn Giandomato's goal with 1:31 left in overtime lifted No. 25/24 Pitt to a 15-14 win over the University of Louisville lacrosse team in the Cardinals' home finale Saturday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
The tightly-contested game featured five lead changes and six ties, with Pitt leading by as many as four goals in the first quarter and the Cardinals leading by as many as three in the third.
All in all, I thought it was a great lacrosse game for both programs, said UofL head coach Scott Teeter. I think both programs were very similar today. At times we played some great lacrosse and at other times we were our own worst enemies. There was a lot of adversity and a lot of emotion back and forth and a game of runs. Both teams had answers.
Maggie McMahon made the most of her senior day, tying her career highs with six points including four goals and two assists. Sophomore Ella Berg also tallied four goals and dished out a pair of assists for a career-best six points on the day. Junior Reese Whiteman found the back of the net three times for her seventh hat trick of the season and 11th of her career. Sophomore Haley Richards collected 11 saves in net for Louisville (6-8, 2-7 ACC).
Pitt (8-7, 4-6) jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game before the Cardinals answered with a 5-0 run. With 4:12 remaining in the first quarter, senior Erin Nicholson connected on a feed from Berg to put Louisville on the board. Berg proceeded to notch a pair of back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of the opening frame to make the score 4-3.
After assisting on Berg's second goal of the game, McMahon opened the second quarter with a free position goal and went on to add another less than two minutes later as Louisville extended its run to take a 5-4 lead. The Panthers countered with three unanswered scores to go back on top. The teams traded goals with McMahon pulling the Cards within one and Whiteman converting on a pair of free position shots to even the score at 8-8 entering halftime.
After the break, Louisville continued its run, opening the third quarter with a trio of goals. Sophomore Charlotte Jackson got the second-half offense started when she sent a feed from Berg past Pitt goalie Molly Cain to put the Cards back on top 9-8. Berg quickly added to the lead courtesy of an assist from freshman Grayce Kitchen and then added an unassisted goal to make the score 11-8.
The Panthers countered with a 3-0 run to even the score once again before McMahon's free position goal gave the Cards a 12-11 advantage. After three straight Pitt goals gave the Panthers a 14-12 lead, Louisville battled back to even the score. A free position attempt saw senior Cece Reilly connect with Whiteman and, less than a minute later, McMahon found fellow senior Rian Adkins for the equalizer with 5:14 left in regulation. Throughout the remainder of the game, Richards picked up three crucial saves, including one in the final second to send the contest into overtime.
Pitt attacked early in the extra frame, winning the draw control and firing off a pair of shots with Richards rejecting both attempts. The Panthers broke through with 1:31 on the clock with Giandonato's third goal of the game.
Overall, Pitt outshot Louisville 32-31 with a 23-15 advantage in shots on goal. Giandonato paced the Panthers with five points (3G, 2A) while Emily Clemens tallied three goals with one assist. The Panthers also held an 18-13 edge in draw controls as Giandonato registered a game high 10. Berg and Olivia Scroggie earned four apiece to lead the Cardinals in the draw circle. Louisville led in groundballs by an 18-17 margin with Kitchen grabbing a career-high three. UofL forced 15 Panther turnovers compared to 13 caused turnovers for Pittsburgh.
When you look at a 15-14 overtime game, between two competitive teams, it was good, said Teeter. We obviously want to hone in on some of our mistakes in decision making, but we also capitalized on Pitt's mistakes and made plays all over the field and I think Coach Boisoonneault would say the same about Pitt. All in all, it was a great lacrosse game.
Louisville will return to action on Thursday when the Cardinals travel to No. 19 Notre Dame to close out the regular season.
